Senior Reflection Letter

For my product I decided to shadow a doctor for a day and visit his lab, volunteer at an animal shelter, and teach an animal science class about animal use in cancer research. Overall, I am happy with my decision to do this as my product, but if I could change anything I would have started volunteering longer because it was such a positive experience. My mentor and I spent time going over what I could do to make my product more interactive for me and he was actually the one who set me up with being able to shadow a doctor. It was very successful.

The easiest thing for me was actually volunteering at the shelter because one of my biggest strengths is being able to work with both animals and people. The shelter gave me an opportunity to do just that. I learned that not everything is going to be handed to you and sometimes you have to work for yourself. I had difficulties getting in touch with certain people, but I worked through that and eventually did everything I had originally planned to do.

Fecal sample collection from that day.

I helped feed the chickens all different types of feed for testing.

This is the doctor that I shadowed for the day.

Dr. Ferket was the doctor who gave me the opportunity to shadow Dr. Malheiros.

I was working in the lab at NC State.

This is paperwork that has to be filled out every day for proper care.

We worked in the lab and Dr. Malheiros showed me the microscope technology.
